A Brief POV Change: Student Thoughts on Laptops in the Classroom

This post came up on De Novo, one of the student blogs I track. We spend a fair amount of time going on about things like laptops and wireless in the classroom and it is of interest to hear what students may have to say.

De Novo: Re: Student Use of Technology in the Classroom
The way I see it (and our Dean seemed to agree at a question and answer session I attended last spring), if a professor can’t keep my attention, whose fault is that really? Probably mine, but it doesn’t change the fact that if she can’t keep my attention, no amount of banning instant messenger is going to help. Back before I had a laptop, I doodled. I doodled masterpieces during classes that were uninteresting. Or I daydreamed. I can easily do those things again, and I still won’t be paying attention.

Just out of curiuousity, how many law schools know if their students are blogging?

iPod As a Disruptive PC Boot Device?

Sure Slashdot’s all worked up about the headline “Has Google Peaked?” but the real fun of the article is at the end where the idea of using iPods loaded with OS 10.4 to boot Intel PCs and sending MSFT into spasms is the real neat idea:) Just think about. A 20 gig hard drive you carry around loaded with a functional operating system and lots of your stuff. Just plug in and boot up. Cool

PBS | I, Cringely . August 25, 2005 – Has Google Peaked?
Every one of those iPods is a bootable drive. What if Apple introduces OS 10.5, its next super-duper operating system release, and at the same time starts loading FOR FREE the current operating system version — OS 10.4 — on every new iPod in a version that runs on generic Intel boxes? What if they also make 10.4 a free download through the iTunes Music Store?

Blogs, Podcasts, RSS: A Niche In A Niche In A Niche

Good article about the demographics behind the those who consume blogs, podcasts, and RSS feeds. As I’ve long suspected at the moment venturing into these waters is apparently developing for a niche in a niche ina niche. The good news is that the niche is growing:)

Podcasts On Campus Growing

I’m sensing a trend with AUWCL announcing its podcasting service this week, and now this. Look likes I’m getting Classcaster out the door just in time and CALI will be in front of this wave. Of course Classcaster has 2 cool features: podcasting with your telephone and podcast enabled blogs. I do need to write more about Classcaster:)

Today, Purdue University announced it will be offering a podcast service covering ‘large’ lectures on campus. Any faculty member can request that their lectures be made available via the service, which is called ‘BoilerCast.’

U of Dayton Law Launches 2 Year Degree Program

Looks like Dayton becomes the first school to take advantage of changes in ABA standards that changed how long it takes to get a JD. Now if someone would just step up and take advantage of the DE changes that the ABA put in place at the same time.

Law Lists Is No More

I remember Law Lists, put out by Lyonette Louis-Jacques, now at the U of Chicago Law School Library. Sad to see it go, but then I also remember when there was a list of all the known websites in the world…
