Online Learning Project Shuttered

The AllLearn project, a consortium among Oxford, Stanford and Yale Universities to research online learning, has come to a close. We offered 110 online courses from Oxford, Stanford, and Yale Universities to over 10,000 participants from 70 countries during the past five years. As we looked to the future, the cost of offering top-quality enrichment courses at affordable prices was not sustainable over time.

Well, this is a bit sobering. One does wonder what the cause of the failure was.  Perhaps this market does not really exist. It is important to note that the consortium was offering enrichment courses, not credit courses or training per se.

The Apple Mini Media Center

New to Front Row is the ability to play shared music via Bonjour, Apple’s automatically configuring, cross-platform local networking technology. As a result, the Mac mini will play all content on Macs connected to a Bonour network (though individuals can opt not to share their content). This content can include all songs stored in iTunes, or photos complete with slideshows or movies.

With the announcement of the first Intel based Macs yesterday, many users have rejoiced in being able to dual-boot both Mac OS X and Windows. Unfortunately, this is not the case; due to Apple’s use of the extensible firmware interface (EFI) rather than BIOS, current Windows releases will not run on the systems.

Bigger question:  Will OS X from the Intel boxes run on non-Apple hardware?
